7 Questions | June 2016

It’s time to meet another “Happiest Mama!” I just love reading about what makes other moms happy and really believe that by speaking to each there about such feelings, we are doing our part to pass along information as women have for all of time. Focusing on the positive is so important. Read on for some spot-on advice for bouncing back from off days, and some great advice on what moms really should remember every day!

This month I spoke to Stacey Kelly, who is a kids yoga teacher in Iowa City, Iowa. “I am a wife, a stay-at-home mom of 7 years, and a mother to the two greatest gifts, my Maxwell age 7 and Isla Vail, age 2. I am a small-business owner, a yoga enthusiast, a lover of children, a teacher, a health and wellness mentor and a role model to my kids and my students.” If you live in the Iowa City/Coralville area, be sure to check out her programming here: www.balancekidsyoga.com and visit her Facebook page. “I wear many hats, ” says Stacey, “I balance many things, but most of all, I am proud of who I am and what I have accomplished, and I look forward to all of the adventures that are yet to come on and off the mat!”

What brings you the most joy? It sounds cliche, but I find the most genuine joy in observing my children’s smiles, laughter and fun! I just want to bottle their happiness and carry it in my pocket. I also find joy in preparing and feeding healthy, homemade meals to my family. I can’t say I do it as often as I should, but it feels so good when I do!

How do you teach your own children happiness or how to focus on the positive? Leading by example. I love the quote, “Children are great imitators, so give them something great to imitate.” My husband is such a positive person and role model for our children and I honestly learn a lot from him about appreciating the simplicity in each day and stopping to smell the roses. We both try really hard to be appreciative of each day and enjoy each day to the fullest, as role models for our children. We also give gentle reminders each day about being grateful for all that we have been blessed with.

“Give yourself lots of moments to just breathe,” Stacey reminds us.

If you could give a large group of mamas one piece of advice, what would it be? Go easy on yourself, remind yourself often that you are giving and doing your best, remember that you are really all your children need, just your presence and your time, and remember to breathe. Give yourself lots of moments to just breathe.

We all have off days. How do you bounce back? We sure do, we are human. But forgive yourself, apologize to those you may have hurt, and wake up the next day prepared to be a better version of yourself.  I know how I feel on those off days, and I know how I want to feel. So I make changes accordingly, knowing that only I can control my actions and reactions.

What was something that made you smile this week? My 2-year old daughter still dressed in her pink tutu from dance class and dainty pink bow in her hair, outfit complete with  bright red rain boots (of her choosing of course), riding around on her brother’s outgrown motorized toy Harley  with red and orange flames and a license plate that reads, “Back Off.” Her sweet and sassy personality makes me smile everyday.

Imagine your perfect Saturday. What would you do?  Waking up to snuggles from my littles (who are already in my bed of course), and a yummy, wholesome breakfast prepared by my better half. And then I would love to be able to run out to a local yoga studio to get my practice on, indulge in a pedicure on my way home, and a kid-free trip to Target with a green tea in hand. Next up, I would meet my family out to lunch at one of our favorite lunch spots, and then off to the park from there to let the kiddos run and explore. Maybe an impromptu family yoga at the park taught by yours truly, a yummy ice cream treat on the way home, and then get the kiddos to bed early enough to enjoy a movie in with my hubby. Pretty simple, I’d say, although most of these items happen on a very rare occasion, except the park and ice cream. I’m not complaining one bit though. Life is good.

Complete this sentence: I’m at my happiest when I…Have had a complete and fun-filled day with the fam, and we are snuggling in bed getting ready to go to sleep. I breathe it all in and try to take a mental picture to remember these little days with them forever. I smile to myself and am thankful for my blessings.

Like all women, I am many things and wear many hats. I am a wife, a stay-at-home mom of 7 years, and a mother to the two greatest gifts, my Maxwell age 7 and Isla Vail, age 2. I am a small-business owner, a yoga enthusiast, a lover of children, a teacher, a health and wellness mentor and a role model to my kids and my students.  I’m also a former runner, lover of travel (although we don’t do this often enough), and a self-proclaimed fashionista, although these days you will mostly find me in yoga pants, a t-shirt and Chuck Taylors or birks. I also admire interior design, love decorating, clean eating {80/20 rule}, being outdoors in nature and consider myself a crunchy mama of sorts. I dabble in gardening,  I love planting flowers and it is my desire to always have fresh flowers adorning a spot in my living room. I  feel free on the mat, and try to live in, and for the moment. I like cleanliness and orderliness, and I have a love hate relationship with cleaning. I am self-proclaimed homebody, except when I’m outdoors that is. I love hiking, being outside with my kids, biking and exploring new places. I am a friend, daughter, sister, aunt and a people pleaser. I like people to like me and I can get my feelings hurt easily at times. I’m a middle child, a Taurus, an entrepreneur, an innovator and a strong and independent female. I wear many hats, I balance many things, but most of all, I am proud of who I am and what I have accomplished, and I look forward to all of the adventures that are yet to come on and off the mat!
